I love this! I’m an American citizen who grew up in Kenya; I live in Taiwan now as an adult. I get angry when I hear American parents who’ve never left the U.S. say things like, “I might have considered living overseas, except that I wouldn’t want to put my children through that.”

We love to travel with our kids. Sometimes it takes a little more planning, but essentially it opens our own eyes up too…our kids have never seemed to judge other cultures. They embrace it. Our kids love to travel too, after each trip they ask “where to next?” I love that!

Beautiful post – it’s so true that school widdles away the natural curiosity. I remember when I started studying graphic design our teacher said “we are now going to un-learn 12 years of education…” She meant becoming more childlike again…

I think we need more diversity in the world. Some people can stay on the known track, but having people do their own thing is a benefit to us all. Makes us question things we take for granted

I really think that people wouldn’t say such things if they realized how travel can be like breathing for some of us–necessary to existence!

I’m with you Stephanie. Something that decadent can’t last, and probably shouldn’t. I was one of the lucky ones who visited Vang Vieng back before any of this started and it was a lovely, laid-back little town where the few foreigners who visited were far outnumbered by the locals. About the craziest thing you could do was buy weed in the market or drink a few shots of Lao Lao at a restaurant.

Not that I’m being a cranky old man saying “You should have seen it when…” because progress is good for the locals who need the money. But as you say, there’s a line when progress turns into servants running a playground for insensitive visitors who only come to do what they can’t do at home.
